On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the Archdeacon of Tonga, Venerable Kensington Fifita, together with the Priest in Charge and parishioners of St Barnabas in Mataika, celebrated the blessing and opening of their new residential property. This new 2-bedroom residential property is situated on one of the church lands and has been designed to serve both the church community and the surrounding area.
Standing on one of the highest points in Nukuʻalofa, the property is secured by a perimeter fence and has been endorsed by the National Emergency Management Organization as a designated assembly area for tsunami warning evacuations. The church feels incredibly fortunate to have this space available for both its members and the community during emergencies.

The home is intended to provide accommodation for those in need and also aims to offer financial support for church activities. This project traces its roots back to 2014 and the construction began in 2024. The total cost covered the expenses from clearing to fencing, building the structure, and fully furnishing the home.
Refreshments and entertainment were provided by the parish youth and Sunday school. It was a joyful gathering, attended by representatives from the clergy and the episcopal unit, celebrating an initiative that embodies Archbishop Sione’s call to review, revitalize, and reinforce the church’s mission and ministry.
The Vestry and parishioners of St. Barnabas, Mataika wish to extend their gratitude to His Grace for his prayers and support throughout this project and acknowledge stakeholders who have contributed to making this dream a reality. To ‘Ofa ki he Laumalie Maónióni Ótahuhu, Fetakinima ‘ia Kalaisi, the Trinity Construction in Auckland, Talitha Project, and Mr. Bernie Moa.
