2026 General Synod /Te Hīnota Whānui in Tonga

The 67th General Synod / Te Hīnota Whānui of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia will be held in Nuku'alofa from 15–21 August 2026, hosted by the Diocese of Polynesia. Gathering bishops, clergy, and lay representatives from across Aotearoa, New Zealand, and the Pacific, the Synod will provide an important opportunity for worship, fellowship, and discussion on the mission and future direction of the Church.

Under the inspiring theme, “One Mission, One Ocean, One Vaka,” the gathering reflects the shared spiritual journey of the Anglican family across the Pacific region. The image of the vaka symbolizes unity, faith, and collective purpose as the Church navigates the opportunities and challenges of ministry in today’s world. The theme also highlights the deep connection of Pacific peoples to the ocean and the growing call to care for God’s creation and strengthen Christian witness throughout the region.

The week-long Synod is expected to include worship services, presentations, discussions, and decisions on matters affecting the life and mission of the Church. Hosting this historic event in Tonga is a significant milestone and a celebration of the faith, hospitality, and leadership of the people of Polynesia within the wider Anglican Communion
