15 August 2026 | Nuku’alofa, Tonga
The Tonga Episcopal Unit of the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia has warmly welcomed more than 200 delegates, observers, church leaders and representatives from across the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia for the 67th General Synod/Te Hinota Whānui, being hosted in the Kingdom of Tonga under the theme “One Mission – One Ocean – One Vaka.”
This significant gathering brings together the three Tikanga of the Anglican Church—Tikanga Māori, Tikanga Pākehā, and Tikanga Polynesia—representing five countries, 13 dioceses and one united Church. Joining the Synod as special guests were His Grace Archbishop Leonard Dawea of the Anglican Church of Melanesia and Bishop Bob Fitzpatrick of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i, further reflecting the bonds of faith and partnership that connect the Anglican Communion across the Pacific.
For Tikanga Polynesia, hosting the General Synod in Tonga carries particular significance. This year marks 200 years since Christianity reached the shores of Tonga, providing a fitting occasion for the Church to gather, give thanks for the generations who have carried the Christian faith, and look towards the future of its mission across the Pacific.
From the beginning of the gathering, delegates have been immersed in the warmth, hospitality and cultural heritage of Tonga. A significant highlight was the Royal Audience at the Royal Palace in Nuku’alofa, where the three Archbishops were received by His Majesty King Tupou VI. The occasion also included the traditional presentation from the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia to His Majesty, marking the importance of the Church’s presence in Tonga and its relationship with the Kingdom.
Following the Royal Audience, the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia, through the Tonga Episcopal Unit, formally welcomed the delegates and observers with a traditional Tongan welcome. This celebration of Tongan culture and hospitality was followed by a fellowship gathering hosted by St Andrew’s High School, bringing together visiting churches, delegates and members of the local community in a spirit of friendship and celebration.
The 67th General Synod is more than a meeting of the Church’s leadership. It is an opportunity to celebrate the unity of the three Tikanga, honour the rich history of the Christian faith in Tonga, strengthen relationships across the Pacific, and discern together the Church’s mission for the years ahead.
